Pipeline Improvement Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of projects are covered on this page?
In general, the Worksites section of www.pgworks.com covers planned projects which are scheduled to start within the next month.

While Philadelphia Gas Works constantly inspects, maintains and monitors the network of pipes it uses to meet the complex energy needs of our City only work that has a firm start date and the capacity to inconvenience residents is included.

PGW invests millions of dollars a year to maintain its safe, reliable natural gas distribution system across Philadelphia, creating local jobs, keeping rates for natural gas more steady, reducing ongoing maintenance costs and minimizing service disruptions.

How often is the information updated?
PGW makes every effort to ensure the information displayed here is current. However, if you have questions or concerns about possible work in your area, contact us at 215-235-1000.

How long do these projects take?

Every highlighted job is unique which means schedules are subject to modification. Philadelphia is an older city and our crews can encounter unexpected obstacles as they work. PGW always tries to be as quick as we can with each project but safety and the need for caution dictate the completion date.

What kinds of disruptions can these projects cause?
For most projects we try to ensure that no individual property is without natural gas service for more than eight hours. At the same time, this necessary work does impact people’s normal day-to-day activities, even as it ensures the continued safety and reliability of our system.

To minimize disruptions, we try to avoid road closures unless completely necessary, and we make sure that trash pick-up and deliveries are facilitated.

Who pays for this work?
Projects that are part of PGW’s system maintenance work are already part of the annual rates charged to PGW customers.

Will sidewalks be replaced once work is complete?
Yes. All natural gas pipelines are buried, so digging is necessary. For that reason PGW is committed to restoring roads and sidewalks impacted by our work.

What if I have additional questions?
You can call PGW at 215-235-1000.
