Gas thieves put life and property at serious risk

(Philadelphia, Pa. – November 16, 2007) – Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) is urging city residents to take action if they become aware of anyone who illegally tampers with natural gas lines to avoid paying for their service.

“Gas theft is much more than just an economic crime,” said PGW spokesman Doug Oliver. “Tampering with gas lines could very well result in a fire or explosion that could cause serious property damage, or more important, serious injury or death.”

On Monday, November 13, for example, a gas by-pass that was fashioned to avoid payment resulted in an explosion that blew off the roof and back wall of one house and damaged several neighboring properties in the 4400 block of N. Franklin Street in North Philadelphia’s Nicetown section. Following an investigation, police arrested a resident who was charged with risking a catastrophe and theft of services.

“Thankfully, there were no injuries in this case but the incident should serve as a reminder of how important it is to call PGW whenever you believe someone is tampering with gas lines,” Oliver said.

Anyone who suspects gas theft or tampering should immediately contact PGW’s 24-hour, confidential Gas Theft Tipline at 215-684-6383.

Founded in 1836, PGW, the nation's largest municipally owned natural gas utility, is dedicated to providing safe, reliable service to a half million residential, commercial, and industrial customers within the City of Philadelphia.
