Since February 8, 1836, when the first employees of the newly formed Gas Works lit forty-six lights along Second Street, PGW has been serving the fine people of Philadelphia 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Today PGW is the largest municipally owned gas utility in the country. We manage and maintain a system of over 6,000 miles of gas mains and service pipes that deliver an annual 78 billion cubic feet of safe, reliable natural gas to our 500,000 customers each year.
We, like the great city we serve, have a rich, dynamic history that is leading us into a promising, productive future. Check out our latest Annual Report.
Effective December 1, natural gas rates will be lowered for the next three months from $1.236 per hundred cubic feet (Ccf) to $1.211 per Ccf for residential customers. The new rate includes what PGW pays for the gas and will stay in effect through May 31, 2016.
For the average residential heating customer using 810 Ccf, the change lowers their PGW bill by approximately $1.83 per month, an increase of $21.99 per year.
This decrease reflects what PGW pays for gas. There is no markup. Our rates are made up of two factors:
A supply charge that reflects the amount of gas used by the customer. This charge is what PGW pays for the gas and is passed on to the customer without change.
A delivery charge that includes costs of delivering gas to the customer’s residence, maintaining distribution systems and other services. See past adjustments here.
