Protection from Abuse

Protection from Abuse Order and Other Court Orders

If you are a victim or survivor of domestic violence, there may be options to help you with your PGW bill. PGW can help you assess your options and we will not share your sensitive information with any third party. If you currently have a Protection from Abuse (PFA) Order or other similar Pennsylvania court order which provides clear evidence that you are a victim of domestic violence you may have the following protections, regardless of your income.

  • Philadelphia Gas Works cannot shut off your gas service during the winter months (December 1st to March 31st) without PUC permission.
  • Service may not be terminated on a Friday.
  • You will receive additional notice prior to termination.
  • Depending on your specific circumstances, a special payment arrangement may be available.
  • You may not be held responsible for a bill in someone else’s name.
  • You may not be required to pay a security deposit. However, if you are required to pay a security deposit, you may be able to pay it over three payments.

What Is a PFA?

A PFA is an order from the court that protects you, your family, or household members from your abuser. Any PFA, whether an emergency, temporary, or permanent order is accepted by PGW. It is a civil order that you can request on your own behalf against a family or household member, including current or former intimate partners, who is abusing you.

You can find help and get more information about PFAs here: www.pcadv.org/find-help/ or call the national domestic violence hotline here: 1-800-799-SAFE (7233).
