As Philadelphia works towards a more, green tomorrow, PGW plays a key role in the city’s efforts.
PGW is dedicated to leading Philadelphia’s clean energy future and is pursuing several opportunities and initiatives to move the company and the City forward. PGW sets annual emissions reduction targets and shares its progress in Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Reports.
For its 2025 fiscal year (September 2025 to August 2026), PGW’s target reduction was 10,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) and PGW notably exceeded this target, achieving a total reduction of over 12,000 metric tons of CO2e.
GHG Reduction Highlights:
- Replaced 36.1 miles of cast iron and unprotected steel services, reducing emissions by approximately 7,267 MT of CO2e.
- Reduced 3,000 MT of CO2 e through EnergySense programs. Go to pgwenergysense.com to learn more about EnergySense rebates and incentives.
- Redirected tons of waste through a company recycling program to prevent 1,272 MT of CO2e.
PGW’s company-wide emissions footprint is updated every 2 years and has continued to decrease over time.
From 2011 to 2024, PGW has reduced its Scope 1 emissions by 10.1% (36,577 MT CO2e), Scope 2 emissions by 46.4% (3,992 MT CO2e) and, between 2022 and 2024, reduced Scope 3 emissions by 11.2% (574,828 MT CO2e).
PGW currently accounts for approximately 20 percent of the City of Philadelphia’s city-wide GHG emissions and its ongoing efforts are a meaningful step toward achieving the City of Philadelphia’s commitment to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
