Call 811 Before You Dig

It is your legal responsibility to call 811 before performing excavation of any kind so utility lines can be marked on your site.

If you plan to dig with powered equipment; PA Act 287, as amended, obligates you to notify the utility companies of your intent to begin.

Who should call?

  • A homeowner working on their own residential property.

  • Or an excavator hired to work on a property.

Digging blindly can strike buried utility lines like natural gas, high-voltage electricity, or water mains that often run close to the surface. Without having utility lines marked can result in financial liabilities, civil penalties, and fines up to $10,000. It also jeopardizes the safety of excavators and can lead to a complete disruption in facilities, including gas, telephone, and cable services.

Help PGW make one of the safest energy transportation infrastructures in the world even safer. Call 811 or (800) 242-1776 if you’re calling from a number outside Pennsylvania.
