Be Sure Before You Open the Door
Always ask for identification before letting anyone claiming to be a utility worker into your home or business. Do not allow any person you don't know into your home and do not provide any personal information — such as your phone number or account number — without verifying that they are who they claim to be.
All PGW employees have:
- ID badges
- Official white PGW vehicles with clearly visible PGW logos and municipal license plates
- PGW-branded clothing
If you’re unsure whether someone is really from PGW, call 911. The Philadelphia Police Department can quickly confirm if the person is a PGW employee. If they’re legitimate, they can wait — your safety comes first.

Look Out For Digital Imposters
PGW will never call or text you asking for immediate payment on a delinquent account. Utility scammers may try to contact you and threaten the disconnection of your utility service, demanding immediate payment by prepaid cards or cryptocurrency.
If you are not sure if someone contacting you is a real utility representative, call PGW at 215-235-1000 to verify your account status.
Common Utility Frauds:
- Phone Frauds: Scammers may call or text you posing as a PGW representative. They often make claims that your account is past due and will be disconnected without immediate payment from prepaid debit cards, gift cards, and/or cryptocurrency.
- Email Frauds: Scammers may send fake gas bills via email using an address that appears to be from PGW. They might also send a notice that you have overpaid on a bill and claim you are owed a refund, often asking for sensitive personal or banking information.
Ways to Protect Yourself From Fraud:
- Never give personal or financial information over the phone, such as your social security number or banking information.
- Do not automatically trust the caller ID. Scammers can “spoof” numbers to make it look like the call is coming from PGW.
- Never send a payment without verifying that you are communicating with a PGW representative.
- Double-check that any emails come from a verified @pgworks.com address.
- Do not scan QR codes or click on any links in an email or text unless you’re sure it’s from PGW.
