Our Impact

Transforming the way energy works for you. Cutting emissions, upgrading pipelines for lasting safety, and providing the tools to make confident, sustainable choices.

Our Environmental Impact

As Philadelphia works towards a greener tomorrow, PGW aims to play a key role in our city’s success.

What gets measured, gets managed. PGW’s Methane Reduction Report details an 80% reduction in methane emissions by 2050, based on a 2011 baseline, which PGW is still on track to achieve

Since the Methane Reduction Report was published, PGW has also calculated Scope 1 and 2 inventories for 2019,2022, and 2024, and Scope 3 inventories for 2022 and 2024, which are defined as emissions that are out of PGW’s direct control.

PGW is pleased to share its annual Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Report. This plan highlights updates on all of PGW’s and is one more step forward in PGW’s sustainability planning.

PGW continues to stay on the forefront of its building operations, selecting energy-efficient technologies and innovations whenever possible.

PGW’s onsite Data Center is integrated into a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system. The waste heat generated by the CHP is used to heat domestic hot water and also runs an absorption chiller which cools the Data Center. The CHP can generate up to 40% of the building peak electricity demand and provides 15% of electricity annually.

PGW also makes use of natural gas heat pumps (GMP), a HVAC system powered by a natural gas engine to heat and cool portions of its buildings.

Community and Social Impact

Supporting the people, places, and environment that make Philadelphia home is an important part of PGW's work. From sustainability efforts to community programs, these efforts help build a cleaner, stronger city.

We're proud to stand alongside the City of Philadelphia as a Zero Waste Partner. Since launching our recycling program, we've diverted more than 2,000 tons of waste from local landfills to keep our city cleaner, conserve valuable resources, and set a higher standard for sustainable business practices.

By integrating Electric Vehicles (EVs) into our daily operations, we're reducing smog, cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and helping create a healthier community.

Launched in 2022, our corporate composting program has already diverted more than 33,760 pounds of food waste from landfills. It's a small but powerful step in our journey toward zero waste.
