PGW Recognizes National Public Natural Gas Week
Posted on: Oct 05, 2026PHILADELPHIA (October 5, 2026) – Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) joins the American Public Gas Association (APGA) in celebrating National Public Natural Gas Week, which is observed October 4-10, 2026. This nationwide observance builds awareness about the value and benefits of a municipally owned natural gas utility for residential and commercial customers.
This week and beyond, PGW is raising awareness of the benefits of being a public natural gas utility to communities across Philadelphia and recognizes the need to access natural gas as a safe and affordable energy source.
Unlike investor-owned utilities, as a municipally owned natural gas utility, PGW does not have shareholders. Public natural gas systems do not face pressure to pay dividends to stockholders. Having a public utility helps ensure dollars stay local by creating local jobs and broadening the tax base.
PGW’s natural gas contributes to a variety of everyday experiences and necessities for Philadelphia residents and business owners including:
- Cost savings: Customers who use natural gas for heating, cooking, and drying clothes save an average of more than $1,030 per year compared to homes using electricity. PGW offers the most affordable energy option in addition to providing energy rebates and payment assistance programs.
- Playing a part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in PGW’s service territory: Emissions from U.S. natural gas distribution systems have declined 70% since 1990. Natural gas and its delivery systems play a crucial role in transitioning to cleaner energy.
- Employment opportunities: PGW plays a vital role in hiring local talent and diverse vendors throughout the industry, strengthening economic growth in the Philadelphia region and serving the communities that many in the workforce call home.
PGW has been delivering safe and reliable natural gas to Philadelphia for over 190 years. As the nation’s largest municipally owned gas utility, PGW works to enhance the quality of life for all by delivering safe, reliable, and affordable energy in an environmentally responsible way.
