PGW OFFERS ENERGY AND MONEY-SAVING TIPS AS WARMER TEMPERATURES ARRIVE

Energy conservation and smart thermostats can help keep customers

cool and save money on energy bills

PHILADELPHIA (May 9, 2023) –As Philadelphia transitions seasons, Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) offers customers helpful tips on how to stay cool and comfortable in their homes, conserve energy, and manage their natural gas bills after the winter heating season.

The most effective way to conserve energy and reduce household energy costs is with a smart thermostat. These devices can be controlled by a cell phone and include conservation features such as motion sensors, alerts, and integration with other smart devices. PGW customers can receive a $70 instant rebate toward the purchase of a smart thermostat through the PGW Marketplace.

More home energy-efficient tips include:

  • Using appliances such as dishwashers, laundry machines, and clothes dryers in the early morning or evening when temperatures are lower.
  • Turning off fans when leaving a room. Fans help keep you cool, but most do not lower home temperatures.
  • Checking to make sure the air conditioning unit is in good condition and will work properly.
  • Cleaning or replacing HVAC air filters can lower your system's energy consumption by up to 15%.
  • Using natural ventilation. If you can do so safely, open your windows while sleeping. When you wake in the morning, shut the windows and blinds to contain the cool air.
  • Lowering your water heater’s thermostat. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, lowering the water heater by 10 degrees can save up to 5 percent in energy costs.

In addition to these tips, PGW reminds income-eligible customers that financial assistance is available for their natural gas bills through PGW’s Customer Responsibility Program (CRP), as well as other PGW payment assistance programs that best fit customers’ needs.

PGW Files Request With Regulators to Shield Customers from Billing Anomalies

(Philadelphia, Pa – April 28, 2023) – Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) today asked the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) for emergency relief to exclude May 2023 usage from its Weather Normalization Adjustment (WNA) formula in order to provide an added protection to customers in the event of abnormal weather and to move the WNA proceeding into the rate case in order for a more substantive review of the formula.

PGW proactively filed this request in an effort to shield its customers from a potential anomaly similar to last year.  In making this request, PGW is particularly concerned about its impact on lower-income customers. With respect to the WNA, PGW is focused on protecting its customers – for example, it refunded over $12.6 million to customers, asked the PUC to allow a cap on the charge, and proposed a permanent removal of May from the formula.  Notably, the PUC’s Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement (“I&E”) has indicated that it agrees with the protections PGW has requested for this May and to move the proceeding into the rate case.

For over two decades, PGW has had a WNA as a component of our rates. Utilities use this adjustment to help make customer heating bills more predictable and stable. The WNA adds a charge when weather is abnormally warm, and credits a customer when weather is abnormally cold.

PGW Extends Application Deadline for Energy Innovation Lab to May 9

Energy entrepreneurs developing products or services that advance clean energy and affordability could receive funding and business coaching and mentorship

PHILADELPHIA (April 27, 2023) –The deadline to apply for Philadelphia Gas Works’ (PGW) Energy Innovation Lab has been extended to Tuesday, May 9, 2023. The lab, a collaboration between PGW and  Temple University’s Small Business Development Center (TU SBDC), is a small business incubator for entrepreneurs developing ground-breaking products or services that have potential to reimagine the energy sector.

The goal of the Energy Innovation Lab is to discover a new generation of entrepreneurs whose sustainable concepts can help meet Philadelphia’s growing energy needs, promote energy efficiency and affordability, as well as help the City meet its 2050 goal of carbon neutrality.

Those selected for the two-year incubator will receive comprehensive business and mentoring support services from PGW and TU SBDC, as well as a stipend of up to $30,000. Applicants must have solutions that are beyond the proof-of-concept stage and are entering into product development.

A knowledgeable panel of volunteer judges from Philadelphia’s leading energy, innovation, and start-up development organizations will oversee a two-round evaluation process. Applicants’ proposals will be evaluated and ranked based on viability and alignment with PGW’s mission of enhancing the quality of life for all by delivering safe, reliable, affordable energy in an environmentally responsible way.

The Energy Innovation Lab was established in 2021 and currently supports two companies: ATP-PA, which is developing an economical method of capturing carbon dioxide; and Metal Light, which is developing a portable power generator fueled by metal and air with zero emissions. More information about their participation in the lab can be found here: youtube.com/watch?v=lLCRqO1LyZo.
